Sunday August 19, Barcelona
We wake up to our first bad weather day. It is windy, raining and finally thundering and lightning during breakfast. Jacob isn't heading out in this inclement weather, and Marcus and Elliot seem eager to go see a movie with him. Nancy and Harvey head down La Rambla and find an internet café. 2 euros for an hour - not bad at all! Both of us sit down at adjacent flat screen computer monitors and get a quick internet fix. We then do some shopping and sightseeing. We hop in a cab and head to Gaudi's unfinished cathedral: La Sagrada Familia. It is surreal, to say the least. Then we hop in another taxi to see the Parc Guell, another area devoted to Gaudi's disneyesque architecture. The cabbie waits for us and then takes us to the other side of town near the port, to see the Palau Guell, where Gaudi's museum is, but it's unexpectedly closed! So he drives us over to the Olympic Park where we sightsee and have lunch at this open-air restaurant called La Barca de Salamanca. The whole place is filled with locals. We soon discover why. The "English speaking" head waiter is trying to recommend the lobster. Harvey asks how big is it? He brings out a live lobster about 1 kilo. Harvey is trying to explain to him that at home he eats lobster twice that size - does he have 2 kilos? He says just a moment: and returns with 2 more smaller live lobsters, puts them on top of the other one and says: Voila! 2 kilos! We laugh and laugh. Harvey and Nancy share the single lobster and some outstanding chicken paella. We catch a cab back to the room and wait for the senior Brodzki to return with the 2 junior Brodzkis. They went to see Terminator 3, which they all enjoyed! They also enjoyed some ice cream, though for some inexplicable reason, Jacob didn't want to tell us that part! Harvey took a little nap while Nancy, Jacob and the boys played their word game: this one was words that begin with R and end in Y. There is less than nothing on TV until 8 pm when the tennis comes on; the WTA from Toronto. Henin-Hardenne vs. Krasnoroutskaya. It's a blowout and we prepare for dinner: back to the 4 Gats to show Jacob what we enjoyed so much the night before. We actually had to wait 20 minutes for a table! But dinner was very enjoyable again, and Jacob got to appreciate the quaint qualities of Picasso's old hangout. He practiced his new tactic re: Harvey and food: he ordered whatever Harvey ordered! We all enjoyed a peaceful dinner and walk back to the hotel. We were being picked up at 8 am so we turned in. |
